American of Martinsville "Harlequin" Walnut Low Dreser / Credenza
American of Martinsville "Harlequin" Walnut Low Dreser / Credenza
The "Harlequin" line was designed by Merton Gershun for American of Martinsville. This piece features six drawers on the left & center, with a single door on the right concealing divided shelving. The entire piece has been professionally restored. The original knobs were missing and have been replaced with solid brass ones that are a very close match to the original.
60" L x 18 1/2" D x 30" H
This piece has been professionally restored, but like all vintage pieces, does show signs of wear due to prior use.
From the original advertisement:
"The doors that give this group its unusual facade are very difficult to illustrate and describe. They are concave, sloped to the center from top and bottom and fitted with convex diamonds of polished solid walnut. A striking effect is achieved by the play of light and shadow across the soft finish of the woods."
And from a 1961 newspaper article about the line:
"Decoration is differently and imaginatively achieved by variations of the diamond or harlequin pattern in the wood itself. Here the pattern is molded onto the sculptured centered doors of the long, low chest. . . drawer pulls are the brass-color aluminum set in recessed walnut circles. Legs of the case pieces and tables are five-sided."
