Details: Merton Gershun designed several famous lines for American of Martinsville and was well-known in the design world. This piece is from the second iteration of “Dania” and features rosewood inlays on the chair backs. We located and scanned the complete catalog, it is out our website.
The chairs are reminiscent of Drexel Furniture's "Sun Coast" and "Declaration" collections, both by Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougall, with inlaid rosewood diamonds on the seat backs. The frames have been professionally restored, however the vintage upholstery is still in place. It can be replaced for an additional fee. Contact us for details.
From the original advertisement:
“Influenced by the simplicity of Danish modern furniture, so popular in recent years – DANIA II by American of Martinsville brings us a fresh, new, modern look. American contemporary all the way! You’ll notice it has flair without frills. Simplicity with just a touch of sophistication. All things considered, DANIA II is a natural for modern living – practical, tasteful furniture for your living room, dining or bedrooms. DANIA II is walnut, with a matte lacquer finish. That is to say – it has a dull glow that lets the grain of the wood show to best advantage. Yet it is tough, practical, easy to care for."
